Brazil GSO-training

In the last week of June, hundreds of teachers, students, administrators and artists in Brazil attended workshops, presentations or meet-and-greet-sessions with the GSO coordinator. The three municipalities Santa Maria Madalena, Sao Francisco de Itabapoana and Sao Joao de Barra have invested large in education for their students by training their teachers in the GSO methodology and sustainable theatre-production. The week culminated with the very first Brazil Science Opera.

GSO helps building digital bridges between culture and communities

Welcome Ukraine!

We have a new member in our community! Ukraine!

Iryna Berezovska coordinates international activities at the Junior Science Academy in Lviv, and now this includes the Global Science Opera. She graduated from Peter the Great St.Petersburg Polytechnic University and got her Kandidat degree at Voronezh State Technical University (Russia). After many years of work related to simulating communication systems at a research center , she continued her career in education: first as an Assistant Professor at the Ternopil National Technical University, then at medical and nursing education institutions in Lviv. She was involved in U.S. – Ukraine hospital partnerships and did a fellowship at San Jose State University (CA, USA). Within the framework of programs supported by the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, she developed and completed a few projects focused on information technology in healthcare, patient education, nursing informatics and inclusive education. Iryna Berezovska is a member of the Hand-on Science Network.

The Junior Academy of Science in Lviv (Ukraine) is an educational institution of out-of-school education focused on research and experimental work. Students of 5-11 grades attend different science clubs and take advanced-level classes on science delivered by university faculty members abd researchers. Students carry out research projects in the laboratories of local research institutions and universities under the supervision of scientists. Young researchers take part in regional, national and international intellectual competitions, conferences, festivals and exhibitions. During the summer holidays, the Junior Academy of Science organizes summer scientific schools, archeological, folklore and ethnographic expeditions.

     

Introducing Dr. Giedre Straksiene

From January 2021 Giedre Straksiene, PhD, is a postdoctoral researcher in the Global Science Opera, in the context of HVL’s University project. She came from Center for Studies of Social Changes (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities) at Klaipeda University (Lithuania). Her main research area focuses on development of communicative competence; various teaching/learning drama methods which are applicable in development of communicative competence; aspects between information visualization and communication, and relationships of this phenomena for contemporary art-science context.

She also has over 10 years of experience as a drama teacher. “Working with students, my priority is to involve them into creative learning process, reaching to improve their knowledges and skills. It is important to allow students purposefully go through the creative process within certain specific tasks”.

Giedre is a wonderful and strengthening addition to the GSO-team, and we are so glad to have you with us!

Welcome Romania!

Welcome to Felicia Calmuc, a new member in our GSO-community. She teaches English and French in a public school in Craiova, Romania. Her school is one of few that offers extracurricular activities to students between 4 and 19 years. Part of this offer will now include creative STEAM-work. She is part of the main team who will introduce GSO in Romania and produce a scene in Thrive.

Welcome also to Elisabeta Ana Naghi, a mathematics teacher, with a teaching experience of over 35 years and 15 years in school inspectorates and the Ministry of Education.
She is currently working in the Control Body of the Ministry of Education, the main attribution being to verify the observance of the legislation in education in the entire national education system.
She loves science and art, which is why she is now Romania´s alpha-contact!
